Mounted, laminated textile with machine stitching

My work is about the effects of stitch, color, paint, texture and their effects upon the textile ground. There is energy within this tactile medium and depth of light and shadow when stitch, manipulation, color and even objects are applied. The nature of the surface of the work is paramount so any way to affect that surface is of interest. There is an immense variety of materials and techniques to excite an artist’s passion and to arouse the sensibilities of the viewer.

Additionally, it’s about discovery, relationships, play and forgetting what time it is. My work is also about beauty, eternity and spirit. Inspiration comes from nature, history, archaeology, the written word and the never-ending process of learning.

Certainly there may be story involved or the elation of working with a new technique or material to make a unified and intriguing design. The intention is always to excite the viewer into looking at the work and beyond it into a place of deeper observation, contemplation, peace, beauty or the appreciation of life.

“Take whatever I can offer,
Gifts that I have yet to find,
Skills that I am slow to sharpen,
Talents of the hand and mind.

Things made beautiful for others
In the place where I must be:
Take my gifts and let me love You,
God who first of all loved me.”
