Joslyn Virgin Crowe, Biography
Joslyn’s interest in photography started as a desire to document life. Born in
1977, Joslyn learned through her father’s personality and career as a teacher how
important history is to the present day. This along side the artistic spirit of her
entrepreneurial mother formed the many values and interests of Joslyn’s youth and
growth into her own career as a photographer.
Growing up on the west side of Indianapolis, Joslyn attended Ben Davis High School,
graduating in 1995 with a scholarship to attend Marian College studying the Humanities.
Enrolled at Marion College (1995) with aspirations of becoming a writer and studying
literature, Joslyn begin taking photography classes, and eventually declared this her
second major. In 1997, she took her first series of portraits focusing on the many roles her
mother played in their home. This project, along with the push and support of her mentor
Mitch Eckert and literature professor, Dr. Diane Prenatt, launched her vision, desire and
courage to continue photographing people, working now to embellish the portrait with
chosen themes, props, costumes or detail.
Graduating Marion College in 2000 with degrees in Art and English, Joslyn utilized
her education to foster a poetic approach to creating photographs, thus helping her to
define and connect the evocative nature of the two disciplines. Learning from others had
always been part of her education, now turning to conversations with those she respected
in order to move forward; Darryl Jones, Denis Ryann Kelly and Randy Johnson of
Indiana among them. With degrees in hand, Joslyn began assisting photographers and
eventually accepted an internship with The Indianapolis Children’s Museum; her work
there earned her a permanent position as an assistant in their Art department. Inspired by
coworkers and mentors, she decided to turn her passion for photography into a career as a
freelance photographer. Through her work she would meet John Crowe, Indianapolis
photographer, who would eventually become her husband and business partner, together
owning and operating Crowe’s Eye Photography specializing in weddings and portraits.
Today – married two years and now expecting their first child – they continue to find
value and substance in working in the field where their passion and talent have become
so prevalent to their careers and life together.
In 2004, Joslyn’s piece “Among Old Trees” earned the award “Best of Show” in the
local show, Gallery 8. This notice and interest from the public led to showing more work
throughout the area. Over the past four years, Joslyn has been honored to display at such
noted galleries as The Dean Johnson Gallery, Eiteljorg Museum, Clowes Memorial Hall,
The Wheeler Arts Community, Studio One, The 4 Star Gallery where she received “Best
of Show” and The Indiana Historical Society where her self portrait was awarded
Honorable Mention from the Spirit and Place panel. She has also spent this time
working closely with Indianapolis’ contemporary dance company, Dance Kaleidoscope,
having her work featured in dance magazines, on Indianapolis-area billboards and in
DK’s seasonal promotions. Joslyn’s upcoming shows include the premiere of the
Chamber Orchestra, “See What Moves You” benefitting Dance Kaleidoscope at the AV
Framing Gallery in Fountain Square, July 4th, and the grand opening night of Crowe’s
Eye Photography’s new studio on Main Street in Carmel, IN.
