Josh Johnson -- Show June 2007
Josh Johnson is a native of southern Indiana, in the indyllic town of New Albany. He has developed a unique technique combining watercolor, illustration, letterpress, and his own imaginative characters!

In his show "A Monkey, Some Marionettes and Other Assortments", Josh’s watercolor and line work find their way from paper and canvas to wood panel for an expansion in sizes and depth. He continues with his favorite marionettes, an organ grinder monkey, and cats as subjects. Plus showing his first self-portrait in a public setting.

Josh Johnson -- Artist Statement:

Cats somehow find their way into my work. As do the aged and worn. Browns and greens. With a foot in a time I never lived, I find solace in the remnants and forgotten. Whether it be a photograph, a scrap of paper, or even the letterpress I use, it all creeps into the images and stories of moments, objects and the people who exist within and around them.
I have expanded this body of work to wood, which has proven to be a great surface for my heavy watercolor washes and pencil. There is a particular depth that can be achieved while maintaining a strong line. I have also continued to work with ongoing themes such as marionettes, owls and a particular monkey. My self-portrait brings all this together into the largest watercolor piece I have created to date.
