My favorite artist, Brian Duff, has returned to Indianapolis. We are celebrating his brand new works with this show. Here's what Duff has to say about it:
If this collection of works had a title it might be Alternative Supports. This is meant as a double-entendre. The paintings are executed on masonite, canvas, and what would be generally identified as student paintings, all scrounged from thrift stores and yard sales. On another level, as an individual struggling with mental illness, whether it be medicine or my current residence in a boarding home, I have a feeling of floating on a sea where the only thing I have between me and peril is the medicine, this group of strange and spirited comrades who support me and old memories both immediate and divorced from myself. On subject, the mountain to me is a symbol of strength, the ultimate support, outlasting eons of time. My mind is therefore approaching constantly but never reaching that summit. This is something an artist finds after some time of working. Layers of memories from my early life, severe traumas are coming to light, and the mountain I grip rises above all the pain and uncertainty. Also, in this set I would like to think the balanced palettes of past works are achieving more control- despite not always balanced- as I work in the new subjects. One key piece which came early in this group is The Sculptress. It is based on Picasso's Woman and Iron, though in a more festive, colorful way. - Brian
