Featuring the whimsical, slightly twisted art of Candice Hartsough McDonald.

Artist Statement:

I am inspired by simple shapes, the birds that visit my birdfeeder, the children that I meet, and the everlasting belief that my cat could talk to me if I would just listen harder. Children’s books have always spoken directly to my heart, and, being a children’s illustrator myself, my work tends to look playful, peaceful, cheerful,
and funny. While it is superficially lighthearted, it is usually underscored by larger, often malicious, plots against the children and animals portrayed. Soft colors and gentle shading cuddle next to angry birds and fleeting ghosts.
This new body of work explores an imaginary time period in an imaginary city
located somewhere within the state lines of Indiana. Inviting and peaceful, it is also
fraught with perils, some obvious, some missing. The downfall of this civilization is
unknown, but the documentation exists as a lasting tribute to the citizens who tried
so hard to maintain their seemingly perfect society.

Bio:

Candice Hartsough McDonald was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, and spent her entire
childhood with a pencil in her hand. After high school she moved to Indianapolis,
and soon graduated from the Herron School of Art and Design where she studied il-
lustration and printmaking. Since then she has worked as a freelance illustrator. Her
work has appeared in several Indiana publications and galleries around the city and beyond. Currently she is working on her first children’s book, which is scheduled to come out in 2009. She lives with her husband, Brandon, and extremely witty cat,
Mona. They have plans to someday build a tree house on a tiny island in the middle of Fall Creek, but they realize that may only be an unrealistic dream.
