the mirrors project - Show August and September 2008
John April (born 1969 in St. Louis, MO) is an American visual artist who creates site-specific installations based on his daily writing practice. April combines text, visual elements, physical space, and documentation of the creative process to introduce writing into everyday life. the mirrors project incorporates text fragments from a collection of writing produced by the artist over a 20-year period. The text is transferred onto a wall covered in old mirrors. The September installation at A/V Framing gallery in Indianapolis’ Fountain Square is a full-scale application of a process developed in the winter of 2008. The mirrors are sourced from an antique mall in central Indiana. the mirrors project is the answer to four of April’s most current research questions:

* Can the writing process be displayed visually?
* Are the materials, studio, and the ritual of a writing practice compelling visual art materials?
* Is it possible to explore features of a narrative (drama, suspense, dialogue, setting) through visual art using the material developed in my writing practice?
* Can the audience be incorporated into the work?
